چکیده

The cross covariogram gK,L of two convex sets K, L ⊂ R n is the function which associates to each x ∈ R the volume of the intersection of K with L + x. The problem of determining the sets from their covariogram is relevant in stochastic geometry, in probability and it is equivalent to a particular case of the phase retrieval problem in Fourier analysis. It is also relevant for the inverse problem of determining the atomic structure of a quasicrystal from its X-ray diffraction image. The two main results of this paper are that gK,K determines three-dimensional convex polytopes K and that gK,L determines both K and L when K and L are convex polyhedral cones satisfying certain assumptions. These results settle a conjecture of G. Matheron in the class of convex polytopes. Further results regard the known counterexamples in dimension n ≥ 4. We also introduce and study the notion of synisothetic polytopes. This concept is related to the rearrangement of the faces of a convex polytope.

Phase Retrieval for Characteristic Functions of Convex Bodies and Reconstruction from Covariograms

We propose strongly consistent algorithms for reconstructing the characteristic function 1K of an unknown convex body K in R from possibly noisy measurements of the modulus of its Fourier transform 1̂K . This represents a complete theoretical solution to the Phase Retrieval Problem for characteristic functions of convex bodies. The approach is via the closely related problem of reconstructing K ...

The Cross Covariogram of a Pair of Polygons Determines Both Polygons, with a Few Exceptions

The cross covariogram gK,L of two convex sets K and L in R n is the function which associates to each x ∈ R the volume of K ∩ (L + x). Very recently Averkov and Bianchi [AB] have confirmed Matheron’s conjecture on the covariogram problem, that asserts that any planar convex body K is determined by the knowledge of gK,K . The problem of determining the sets from their covariogram is relevant in ...

Retrieving Convex Bodies from Restricted Covariogram Functions

The covariogram gK(x) of a convex body K ⊆ E is the function which associates to each x ∈ E the volume of the intersection of K with K+x. Matheron [Mat86] asked whether gK determines K, up to translations and reflections in a point. Positive answers to Matheron’s question have been obtained for large classes of planar convex bodies, while for d ≥ 3 there are both positive and negative results. ...

Confirmation of Matheron’s Conjecture on the Covariogram of a Planar Convex Body

The covariogram gK of a convex body K in E d is the function which associates to each x ∈ E d the volume of the intersection of K with K + x. In 1986 G. Matheron conjectured that for d = 2 the covariogram gK determines K within the class of all planar convex bodies, up to translations and reflections in a point. This problem is equivalent to some problems in stochastic geometry and probability ...

Tiling Three-space by Combinatorially Equivalent Convex Polytopes

The paper settles a problem of Danzer, Griinbaum, and Shephard on tilings by convex polytopes. We prove that, for a given three-dimensional convex polytope P, there is a locally finite tiling of the Euclidean three-space by convex polytopes each combinatorially equivalent to P. In general, face-to-face tilings will not exist.
